What "wildcard" actually means
A standard single-domain certificate secures exactly one hostname. A wildcard certificate secures the base domain and every first-level subdomain under it with one purchase. So a single Comodo SSL WildCard on *.example.com covers www.example.com, shop.example.com, blog.example.com and any new subdomain you add later, without buying or installing anything else. Note that a wildcard covers one level: sub.sub.example.com would need its own wildcard or a separate certificate.
Is DV the right validation level?
Domain Validation confirms that you control the domain and nothing more. It encrypts traffic to exactly the same 256-bit standard as more expensive certificates, which is why it suits blogs, portfolios, brochure sites and the many small properties typical of a site network. If you need a certificate that also displays a verified organisation name, that is a job for an OV or EV product rather than this DV wildcard. For encryption and modern configuration, the padlock is identical; the difference is purely the identity assurance shown to a visitor who inspects the certificate.
