What Class A, B and C actually mean here

When SEO hosts talk about IP "class" they are almost always talking about the octets of an IPv4 address, not the old classful network allocations that IANA originally defined. An IPv4 address has four octets, written as A.B.C.D. The further to the left two addresses differ, the wider the separation between them:

  • Class D (fourth octet): only the last number differs, for example 192.168.10.1 and 192.168.10.2. These are neighbours on the same subnet.
  • Class C (third octet): the third number differs, for example 192.168.10.5 and 192.168.44.5. This is the level of separation our standard SEO hosting is built around.
  • Class B (second octet): the second number differs, for example 192.168.10.5 and 192.200.10.5.
  • Class A (first octet): the first number differs, for example 192.168.10.5 and 41.168.10.5. This is the widest common separation.

Does a wider IP class rank better?

It is worth being straight about this: a Class A or Class B footprint is not a positive ranking signal on its own. Search engines do not reward you for owning addresses that are further apart. The value of IP diversity is defensive and structural, not a magic ranking lever:

  • Reputation isolation. Sites on different networks do not automatically share the blast radius of a bad neighbour, spam complaint or blacklisting on one address.
  • Footprint control. For an agency or network operator running many related sites, spreading them across wider address ranges reduces the obvious, easy to detect pattern of dozens of sites clustered in a single Class C.

Search guidance is about content and behaviour, not the numeric distance between your IPs; low quality, manipulative networks get actioned regardless of how their addresses are spread. Wider IP classes are risk management for legitimate multi-site operations, not a substitute for genuinely distinct, useful sites.

When Class A or B is worth it

For most customers, our standard Class C IP hosting already delivers the separation that matters, giving each site a dedicated IP on a different Class C so no two of your sites obviously share the same third octet. Class A and Class B become relevant when:

  • you run a large network and want the individual sub groups to sit in genuinely separate address ranges;
  • you are consolidating sites from many providers and want to engineer a deliberately varied footprint;
  • a specific project brief calls for maximum address level separation.
