Organization Authentication is Step 1 of the Organization Validation (OV) process for your SSL certificate. Before a certificate authority will issue an OV certificate, it has to confirm that the business or organisation named in the request is a real, legally registered entity. This first step is where that check begins, and getting it right up front keeps the rest of the validation moving quickly.

Where Step 1 sits in the OV process

An OV certificate is not issued from a single check. It is granted after a short chain of separate verifications, each confirming a different fact about your organisation. Organization Authentication is the foundation the later steps build on.

  1. Step 1: Organization Authentication, confirming your organisation legally exists (this article).
  2. Step 2: Locality Presence, confirming the registered address.
  3. Step 3: Telephone Verification, confirming a listed, verifiable phone number.
  4. Step 4: Domain Authentication, confirming you control the domain the certificate covers.
  5. Step 5: Final Verification Call, a closing call before issuance.

What Organization Authentication actually checks

The certificate authority verifies that your organisation is a registered legal entity, using independent, public sources rather than anything you simply type into a form. In practice that means matching your organisation name against records such as a government business registry, a chamber of commerce listing, or an equivalent official record for your country. The name, and often the registration number, must match what you submitted for the certificate.

To make this step painless, get these ready before you start:

  • Your exact legal organisation name, spelled the way it appears in the official registry.
  • Your registration or incorporation number, if your jurisdiction issues one.
  • Supporting documentation the certificate authority may request, such as articles of incorporation or a business licence, in case the registry lookup alone is not conclusive.

ASEOHosting provides an Organization Authentication guide that walks through exactly what the issuer expects at this stage, so your details line up with the registry on the first attempt.

Why choose OV over a domain-validated certificate

A domain-validated (DV) certificate proves only that you control the domain, and it can be issued in minutes with no human check of who you are. An OV certificate adds a vetted layer: the padlock still appears, but the certificate details now carry your verified organisation name. That matters most for checkout pages, client logins, and any site where visitors are handing over data and want reassurance that a real, identified business stands behind it. The encryption strength is the same either way; the difference is the identity assurance, not the security of the connection. You can compare the certificate types and start an order on our SSL certificates page.

After Step 1

Once Organization Authentication passes, you move on to Locality Presence and the remaining steps above. Each is quick if the earlier information was accurate, which is why it pays to be precise here.
