Operational Existence is one of the checks you complete when you order an Extended Validation (EV) SSL certificate. It asks you to demonstrate that your organisation is not just legally registered on paper, but is actually up and running as a real, trading business. This step sits inside the wider EV validation sequence, alongside confirming your legal identity, your physical address, and your control of the domain. It exists because EV is the strictest certificate tier, and the issuing Certificate Authority (CA) must be confident that the entity behind the site genuinely operates before it will vouch for it.
What "Operational Existence" actually means
Legal existence proves your company was formally incorporated or registered. Operational existence goes one step further and shows the business has been actively functioning for a meaningful period, not created yesterday purely to obtain a certificate. In practice a CA is looking for evidence that money moves through the organisation and that it can be reached as a going concern.
You can normally satisfy operational existence in one of two ways:
- Age of the legal record. If your company has been registered with the relevant government or incorporating agency for at least the period the CA requires, that registration record can be enough on its own.
- Third-party confirmation. If the business is newer, you provide independent proof that it is trading, for example a letter from a professional such as a lawyer or accountant, a confirmed bank account, or a recognised business directory or credit-agency listing.
How this fits the EV validation ladder
EV is the top rung of a three-step ladder of trust. Domain Validation (DV) only checks that you control the domain. Organisation Validation (OV) adds a check of the organisation's identity. Extended Validation adds the fullest set of checks, including operational existence, which is why it takes longer to issue than DV or OV.

- Download and complete the Operational Existence form supplied with your EV order.
- Gather the supporting evidence, either a long-standing registration record or independent confirmation that the business is trading.
- Return the form together with the rest of your EV paperwork, such as the enrollment form, so the CA can validate everything together.
- Respond promptly to any follow-up the validation team sends, since missing information is the most common cause of delay.

A note on EV and SEO
An EV certificate raises the assurance level of your organisation's identity, but it is not a search-ranking booster in its own right. Google treats HTTPS as a lightweight signal regardless of validation tier, so a correctly configured DV certificate already earns you that.
