There is no single magic number. How many Class C IPs you need depends on how many sites you run, whether those sites link to each other, and how much you care about hiding the fact that they belong to the same operator. A five-site network that never interlinks has very different needs from a thirty-site network that all points at one money site. This article gives you honest rules of thumb, explains what a Class C IP actually buys you, and helps you size a setup that matches your real risk rather than a number pulled from a forum thread.

First, what "Class C" really means here

The old Class A, B, and C system was retired for routing years ago and replaced by CIDR, so strictly speaking these labels are historical. You can see the original allocation structure in the IANA IPv4 address space registry. In SEO hosting the terms survive as a shorthand for how far apart two IP addresses are:

  • Same Class C: the first three numbers match, e.g. 198.51.100.10 and 198.51.100.240. These addresses are neighbours in the same /24 block.
  • Different Class C: the third number differs, e.g. 198.51.100.10 versus 198.51.113.10. Further apart, and the usual meaning of "Class C diversity".
  • Different Class B: the second number differs, e.g. 198.51.x versus 198.72.x. Further apart still.
  • Different Class A: the first number differs, e.g. 198.x versus 203.x. The widest common measure of separation.

So when people ask how many Class C IPs they need, they are really asking: across how many distinct /24 blocks should my sites be spread so the network does not look like one obvious cluster?

Be honest about what this does and does not do

A dedicated IP on its own is not a positive ranking signal. Google does not reward a site for owning its own address, and no amount of IP spreading turns thin sites into good ones. The value of Class C diversity is defensive and structural, not a boost. It keeps each site off a shared address whose neighbours you cannot vet, and it stops a group of related sites from sharing one obvious address fingerprint. That matters for network operators because footprint is about patterns, and IPs are one of the easier patterns to leave behind. Content, links, and site quality still decide whether anything ranks, and networks built purely to manipulate results remain exposed regardless of how clean the IPs are.

The factor that actually sets the number: interlinking

The single biggest driver of how many Class C ranges you need is how your sites relate to each other. IP separation only matters where a relationship already exists that you would rather not advertise. Two useful cases:

  • Sites that never link to each other and share no other signals. Here IP diversity buys you very little. A dedicated IP each protects you from bad-neighbour reputation, but whether they sit in the same Class C or not is largely academic, because nothing else ties them together.
  • Sites that interlink, or that all point at one money site. This is where Class C diversity earns its keep. If ten supporting sites all link to your main property and all sit in one /24 block, the address pattern reinforces the link pattern. Spreading those sites across distinct Class C ranges removes one of the cheap, obvious tells.

Rules of thumb by network size

Use these as starting points, then adjust for how heavily your sites interlink. They assume every site already has its own dedicated IP, which is the baseline for any serious network.

  • 2 to 5 sites, light or no interlinking. A dedicated IP each is usually enough. If they do interlink, aim for at least two or three distinct Class C ranges so no two linking sites are neighbours.
  • 6 to 15 sites with a support-and-money-site structure. Spread across several Class C ranges, ideally so that each supporting site linking to the money site sits in a different /24. Roughly one Class C range per few sites is a sensible target.
  • 15 to 40 sites. Class C spreading alone starts to look thin because a large cluster in one Class B still shares the first two octets. Mix in Class B diversity so the network is not all in one neighbourhood.
  • 40+ sites, or high-value networks. Reach for Class A diversity, where addresses differ from the first octet. This is the widest separation and the hardest pattern to spot, and it is the right level when the network is large enough that a single mistake is expensive.

Notice the ladder: as the network grows, the useful question shifts from "how many Class C IPs" to "how much diversity, and at which level". More addresses in one narrow range is not the same as more diversity.

A simple way to size it

Rather than counting IPs, map your links first, then let the map set the number:

  1. List every site and draw the links between them, including which sites point at a money site.
  2. Wherever two sites are connected by a link you would rather not have traced, put them in different Class C ranges.
  3. Count the distinct ranges that requirement forces. That count, not a round number, is how many Class C ranges you actually need.
  4. If many sites all link to one target, push the diversity up a level to Class B or Class A so the whole cluster is not sitting in one block.

This keeps you from over-buying isolated addresses you do not need, and from under-buying where the links genuinely expose you.
