Email forwarders redirect messages sent to one address on your domain to another mailbox, while autoresponders reply automatically with a preset message. Both are configured inside cPanel in a few minutes, and neither requires a full mailbox to exist first. This guide walks through creating each one on the standard cPanel (Jupiter) interface.

Forwarders vs autoresponders: what each one does

A forwarder is a routing rule. Mail arriving at, for example, sales@yourdomain.com is delivered onward to another address, such as a Gmail account or a shared team inbox. You can forward to a single address, to several addresses at once, or pipe mail to a program. Because a forwarder is only a rule, it does not consume mailbox disk space by itself.

An autoresponder is an automatic reply. When a message reaches a chosen address, the server sends back a canned response, commonly used for out of office notices or order confirmations. Autoresponders and forwarders can coexist on the same address.

Create an email forwarder

  1. Log in to cPanel and go to the Email section.
  2. Click Forwarders.
  3. Under Create an Email Forwarder, click Add Forwarder.
  4. In the Address to Forward field, type the local part, for example sales, and pick your domain from the drop down.
  5. Choose Forward to Email Address and enter the destination, such as team@example.com.
  6. Click Add Forwarder to save.

To send one address to several people, repeat the process and add a separate forwarder for each destination, all pointing from the same source address. To catch every message sent to any address at your domain, use the Forward All Email for a Domain option, but be aware that a catch all can attract spam.

Create an autoresponder

  1. In cPanel, open the Email section and click Autoresponders.
  2. Click Add Autoresponder.
  3. Set the Character Set to utf-8 so accented characters display correctly.
  4. Enter the address in the Email field and select your domain.
  5. Fill in a From name, a Subject, and the Body of the automatic reply.
  6. Choose a Start time (Immediately or Custom) and, if the absence is temporary, set a Stop time.
  7. Click Create.

cPanel limits how often it replies to the same sender within a set interval, so a single correspondent is not flooded with repeated auto replies. Set a Stop date whenever the message is for a fixed period, otherwise it keeps replying until you remove it.

Deliverability notes

Forwarding can cause problems when the original sender uses strict SPF or DMARC policies, because the forwarded message arrives from your server rather than the original one. Keeping your domain authentication records correct reduces the chance that forwarded mail lands in spam. On a dedicated Class C IP, your sending reputation is not shared with unrelated sites, which helps keep legitimate forwarded and auto reply traffic trusted. For a deeper look at protecting inbox placement, see the email and deliverability guides, and review the SPF specification in RFC 7208.

If you host multiple brands and want each to send from its own footprint, our SEO web hosting plans assign dedicated IPs per site. Need help planning your mail routing? Contact us and our team will walk through the setup.
