What the validation levels mean
All SSL certificates encrypt traffic between the browser and your server to the same standard. What separates the tiers is how much the certificate authority checks about who you are before signing. Domain Validation (DV) confirms only that you control the domain. Organisation Validation (OV) adds a check of the registered business. Historically an EV certificate turned part of the browser address bar green and printed the company name next to the URL. Most major browsers have since removed that visual treatment, so you should not buy EV expecting a green bar in every modern browser. The lasting value of EV is the vetting itself: the organisation details are embedded in the certificate and remain verifiable by anyone who inspects it. If your priority is simply an encrypted padlock rather than displayed identity, a cheaper DV certificate will look the same to most visitors.

Because a human vetting process is involved, EV issuance takes longer than automated DV. Plan for one to five days and have your company registration details ready to speed things along.
